Frequently Asked Questions
Albireo Energy is a nationwide broker and operator of energy buying groups, which means we represent our customers to the electric generator or supplier community. Albireo Energy serves over 30,000 accounts, across 14 states, for purchasing of electric and natural gas, including small, mid-sized and enterprise level facilities. For over 10 years, Albireo has operated major buying groups that are officially City endorsed, including ones with Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. Our portfolio of customers ranges from Main Street retail to restaurants to major office buildings, colleges and manufacturing. The most prized statistic in our business has been our 97+% customer retention rate which is a leader in the industry.
Albireo Energy has the buying scale for your benefit: Albireo has a market leading and proprietary supply network and software platform and can combine your electric load with similar accounts and build local buying groups or take a larger load and run an online auction to secure you a low cost, fixed rate. Our ability to build buying groups to get bulk power pricing, buy at the right time and with the right supplier, is the combination to get your account the best deal. Buying energy in the commodity space does require knowledge about the markets, contracts and trading to ensure the best deal. Albireo has built systems and staff to provide customers with the most efficient and effective buying programs, without the customer having to deal with the details.
Customer Choice has been active and a very popular buying option for businesses across 14 different states, mostly in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. While the stats can vary from market to market, statistically, about 80% of eligible businesses choose a supplier other than the utility when given the choice. Buying energy from a supplier is largely a contract and financial transaction and does not require any changes to your service, delivery relationship with the utility or your operations. The supplier contract charges would replace your “Electric Supply Services” section on your utility invoice. The process produces savings and budget security, as you can lock in low rates for longer terms.
While customer choice appears to be moving forward, there are still legislative steps to happen. Albireo Energy is now signing customers into our EnergyAuctions agreements which will include you in our buying groups for when/if the market opens in 2021. By signing, your electric account will be committed and placed into our VA Buying Power program, but you will not be placed into a supply contract until the law has been adopted. While you will be a member of the Buying Power program, you WILL NOT be placed in a supply deal unless there are savings versus the active utility rate at the time of execution. By signing with Albireo Energy, you will receive all the benefits of our Buying Power program and be part of the larger group purchase once the market fully opens. If the law does not get re-upped in the legislature, nothing will happen with your accounts and you will remain on the current utility rate.
Unfortunately, this program is simply for non-residential accounts and that is determined by the utility rate class on your invoice. There may be viable offers for residential electricity, but those offers can come from different suppliers than serves the business customers. If you have any questions, as to your eligibility for this program, please contact our offices and we will guide you through the rules.
In addition to Albireo Energy, many recognizable companies are supportive of customer choice in Virginia including Target, Walmart, Krogers, Microsoft and many more. No. You still receive your power from the utility at the same level of service as you do today. Your utility (i.e. Dominion, APCo and others) will continue the delivery of power to your business, because that part remains regulated and a monopoly. This includes maintaining and repairing of the poles, meters and wires in your area and if your power should go out, you will continue to call the utility. By selecting VA Buying Power, you are allowing us to arrange the competitive supplier who will ship your electricity to the utility.
Initially VA Buying Power will focus on areas served by Dominion and Appalachian Power (APCo). If your electricity is billed by one of these utilities and you are an organization (business, corporate, charity, church, school, college, university or other non-residential account) you are eligible to join VA Buying Power and receive the group purchasing benefits.
